Final Project Proposal (fixed!)
I dont know why my old powerpoint decided to start coming up instead of my updated version…hope this works! I have found it works better if you don’t view it in the blog, but actually pick “view on slideshare”…that way you will be able to view all of the words on the slides without them getting cut off. Sorry about all of that!
Hey guys, I have updated my powerpoint for my final project proposal….check it out and let me know your thoughts. I changed my research area to southern Idaho (an area I am much more familiar with and interested in) and also was more interested in pursuing not just the question of how technology (or lack thereof) affects women’s careers in general….but affects their pursuit TECHNOLOGY RELATED careers (does women’s lack of access keep them from pursuing these types of careers?)
Hi Alli,
Were we supposed to do an annotated bibliography on our reference list for our proposal? Agh. I hope not… Um…. Will need to re-verify with Kim.
Anyway, your powerpoint was nice! It was easy to follow, convenient, etc.
Coming from a cultural studies position, my only suggestion would be to narrow your definition of the women you are going to include in your study. Demographics like racial identity, age, sexual orientation, gender identification, etc. would be helpful in your paper so you don’t overgeneralize. Of course, you probably won’t know all of that until you start sampling, but that might be some information you would want to include. 🙂
Thanks Mary!!! I will definitely look into narrowing it does more….I think I’m going for “young women in Idaho” between 18-25. I don’t necessarily think that I want to narrow it down by race as well (although, since the field is limited to Idaho, it will be a majority white and hispanic population)…do you think it needs to be defined more specifically than that?
As far as the annotated bibliography goes, I am pretty sure Kim said she wanted one with the proposal. Double check with her I guess, I don’t want to be responsible for making you do all of that work if you dont need to 😉
hey Alli,
I am confused – are you looking at India or Idaho?
As for the anno bib, I don’t think we need to do that – I could be wrong though. I thought we were just supposed to have references as usual at the end of the paper.
Alli, can I give you feedback after you clear the India/Idaho confusion? Your PPT said India, and you and Mary are talking about Idaho, so I am zapped! 😉
Priyanka
Alli–
Your topic (if it is Idaho) is relevant and your emphasis on tech jobs is fine–you need to clearly articulate WHY this matters for your research, what is at stake, what is the problem you are addressing with this research. Your powerpoint is fine for getting across the basics, but I am not seeing the specifics, the introduction and links to class themes.
Some specifics for improvment:
1. india or idaho?
2. if your focus is on jobs then your research questions need to begin there. You also need one large/framing question that leads into your others–so we can see what the issue is and what the stakes are for studying this topic in depth
3. your main topic needs a clear introduction section–what are the issues, how are they framed now, what is missing etc.
4. slide three ends and I can’t see the whole thing
5. methodology section needs to be linked to the questions–why is this the best way to do this project?
6. links to class themes not clear–you need more expository writing or if you want to use slides that is fine, but with just the questions and method I get no sense of the problem and its specific need to be addressed–what are the stakes involved.
7. You need a clear statement/section on the ecology of this issue–map it oiut and the technological imaginary that surrounds this issue.
I am really annoyed….I just looked at the powerpoint to see why you were all getting confused with India…and somehow my old powerpoint is now the one playing, not my finished version, which is the one Mary and I looked at. I have no idea what happened. I’ll look into slideshare and try to figure it out.
Okay, my powerpoint has been updated, hopefully its the right one again now. I have found it works better if you don’t view it in the blog, but actually pick “view on slideshare”…that way you will be able to view all of the words on the slides without them getting cut off.
Sorry about all of that!
